A Toast to Rod Smith
After 13 years in the NFL, Rod Smith decided to call it quits. Smith was a guy most didn’t give a chance to make it in the NFL. Coming out of Missouri Southern, he fought to make it onto the practice squad as an undrafted free agent. As Denver coaches saw his potential, he began to play more and more. Eventually, he was a starter and leader of the Broncos as they marched to their championships in 1998 and 1999.
At the time he announced his retirement, not many argued he was the franchise’s best receiver in their history, leading every single important receiving category. But also, Rod Smith was the greatest undrafted receiver to make it in the NFL, as he also holds every receiving record among undrafted players.
Smith’s presence on fantasy rosters in recent years was unheard of after his hip surgeries. Through his career, however, he was a definite presence at the WR position having over 8 seasons of 1,000+ yds receiving. 9 out of 12 seasons he boasted more than 70 catches. He even had a 12 TD season in 1997 and a 11 TD season on 200.
Best of luck in all of your future endeavors, Rod Smith.
