Last Minute Fantasy Football Advice

August 23, 2008 rgffootball 2 comments

If you like football, you spend January watching the NFL playoffs. If you’re like me, come February you start experiencing withdrawals and start mock drafting for fantasy football. Its a good thing most people in the world are normal. Luckily for all you normal people, there are fantasy football addicts like me to get advice from this late in August.

For all of you who wait till the last minute for your draft to avoid all of the preseason injuries and roster changes, you have a to-do list before your draft. Regardless of what pick you are or whether your league has an online or live draft, you should have your rankings, ADPs, round targets, roster sheet and an overall gameplan entering the draft.

Your fantasy rankings are self explanatory. This is your complete list of players you look to draft. I like to rank players based on position, but you can create your own big board as to not miss anyone. The key to your rankings is to not live or die by them. In a draft, you want to get the most value for your pick. If that means not taking the next person on your list, then do so. An important tip for drafting is get your stars early. Then when the later rounds come don’t draft based on the previous years number, rather draft players with the most upside to line your bench.

Average Draft Positions are the second most important tool in your fantasy preparations. A number of sites give average draft positions, whether they be from mock drafts or actual drafts. This will give you an idea on where you can get players you are targeting. This is also a tool that can help prevent you from over drafting a player. Other fantasy managers will over draft players but don’t let it throw you off. Whenever a player is selected way too early it just means a better pick with higher value has the potential to fall.

Round targets are a good way of having back up plans. Use the ADPs to help you create your round targets. A lot of the time fantasy managers get caught off guard by a player being selected right before their pick. This is something that occurs religiously in drafts and the best way to counter it is to not let it take you by surprise. To create round targets, make a list of three or four players for each round for you to set your sights. For example, if Santonio Holmes is potentially falling to you at the 11th spot in the fourth round and the tenth pick drafts him, you don’t panic and over draft Jerricho Cotchery.

Roster sheets are a must have on draft day. A roster sheet is simply the list of teams and positions that you fill out during your draft. Many online drafts have this built into their draft rooms, so use them to your advantage. Try to know what other teams need so when your pick comes, you’ll know if you can wait on a position or not.

The is only so much preparation you can do for a fantasy draft, drafting performance is something that can vary each time. Drafting is a lot like gambling-its a mix of luck and skill. Anyone can get lucky. However, if you have the smarts to back it up, you can still set yourself up for a competitive fantasy season.

Lewis’s NFL Power Rankings- Preseason

August 23, 2008 rgffootball 3 comments

David Lewis, VP of Operations

Every week for the rest of the season I will be updating my personal power rankings of the NFL. These rankings are subject to change based on the record, overall play, and state of health of every NFL team. So without further ado here are my complete NFL power rankings heading into the upcoming 2008-2009 season.

Preseason:

1. New England Patriots: With Tom Brady this team is still the most talented and well coached team in the NFL. Without him, they just become mediocre. The success of the Patriots, like several teams, is determined by the health of their QB.

2. San Diego Chargers: This team is without a doubt one of the most talented teams in the NFL and has found a leader in Rivers after his heroic effort in the playoffs. The Chargers have a great chance to win the Super Bowl this year, but if Merriman’s injury is really serious their chances take a big hit.

3. Indianapolis Colts: A number of injuries to many key players on this team like Manning, Harrison, Sanders, and Freeney have caused some doubt of the team’s chances this year. These players are all expected to come back healthy, but the team’s playoff chances rest solely on the shoulders of Manning.

4. Dallas Cowboys: Many people are already penciling them in as the 2008 NFC Champion. They sent 13 players to the Pro Bowl last year and got better with the additions of Adam Jones, Felix Jones, and Mike Jenkins. The real question about this team is not of talent, but of their arrogance. This team could be the best in the league or the biggest bust of the season if they stay too conceited.

5. New York Giants: The Defending Super Bowl Champions aren’t receiving a lot of respect from the media and fans. They will use this “us against the world” mentality to prove last year’s run wasn’t a fluke.

6. Jacksonville Jaguars: This team is primed and ready to finally overtake the Colts as the champions of the AFC South. Their biggest questions are the health of Porter and can the young DEs apply pressure to the opposing QBs.

7. Pittsburgh Steelers: The offense looks stacked now with Big Ben becoming an elite QB, Ward, Holmes, and Sweed for WR, and Parker and Mendenhall at RB. The Steelers will face adversity though with their offensive line and the brutal schedule they must play through.

8. Green Bay Packers: With the Brett Favre drama finally over I feel like Rodgers is ready to become the leader of this team. I actually feel like his style is better suited for this system, which allows the WRs to run after the catch and not create turnovers.

9. Philadelphia Eagles: My surprise pick from the NFC this year. The Eagles have several injuries, but McNabb has looked solid in preseason and DeSean Jackson looks like a really special player.

10. Cleveland Browns: If Anderson’s injury is serious then it will be up to the home town hero Brady Quinn to save the day. If he can’t then the Brown’s reloading in the offseason was all for not.

11. Seattle Seahawks: They have controlled the division for years now and don’t seem poised to relinquish that control just yet. Questions at WR and RB could hurt their attempt at continuing that Division Championship streak though.

12. Washington Redskins: They have looked very good in preseason so far and I feel like Jason Campbell is ready to break out, but is this team ready to make a championship run in their new coach’s first year?

13. New Orleans Saints: New additions on the defense and the late addition of Jeremy Shockey should allow the Saints to win the division once again.

14. Minnesota Vikings: This team is stacked at almost every positions expect the most important in QB. The Vikings success will have a lot to do with the maturation of Tavaris Jackson this year.

15. Tennessee Titans: Young has not looked good so far in preseason, which is a scary thing considering he’s in his third year and has a great defense and run game behind him.

16. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The team has several QBs on the roster, which would seem to make Garcia’s injury not a problem. However, Garcia is the only QB on the team who has won consistently in the NFL.

17. Arizona Cardinals: This team has been a sleeper team for about five years now. It’s about time this team wakes up and performs well enough for a playoff spot.

18. Buffalo Bills: Another sleeper team this year with the team’s success resting on the maturation of Edwards and Lynch.

19. New York Jets: With Brett Favre and the Free Agent additions, the Jets have now become a playoff contender.

20. Houston Texans: A team that plays well but can’t stay healthy (Schaub and Andre) and isn’t talented enough to challenge the heavy weights in their division just yet.

21. Denver Broncos: Cutler has been very impressive so far in preseason. His success has been primarily because of Brandon Marshall. Marshall’s 3 game suspension at the beginning of the year will hurt this team.

22. Cincinnati Bengals: If this team can stay out of jail then they can beat some good teams. However, until the defensive front seven has been retooled the Bengals will be on the losing side more times than the winning side.

23. Oakland Raiders: The Raiders could be a surprise team this year. It just seems like Al Davis is spending too much money on unproven or overrated players.

24. Baltimore Ravens: The defense isn’t any younger and they still don’t have a QB who can win right now.

25. Carolina Panthers: This team could sky rocket up if Smith and Delhomme connect like they did a few years ago.

26. St. Louis Rams: With Steven Jackson finally in camp the Rams will try to recapture their momentum from the 2006 season rather than the 2007 season.

27. Detroit Lions: This team did well last year against bad teams, but failed to beat the good teams. They will need to change that in order to have any success this year.

28. Chicago Bears: The Bears seem to have questions at every offensive position except TE. Rookie RB Matt Forte will need to be great early on for this offense to have any success.

29. Kansas City Chiefs: The team has gone with the direction of reloading; essentially meaning things will be worst before they get better.

30. San Francisco 49ers: This team was a sleeper pick last year, but the offense never got on track. Mike Nolan is banking on J.T. O’Sullivan to reverse those offensive woes of last year.

31. Miami Dolphins: The embarrassment of the NFL last year is reloading under Bill Parcells and new QB Chad Pennington. This team could surprise people and win 5 or 6 games.

32. Atlanta Falcons: Matt Ryan has looked good so far in preseason, but with the players surrounding him it may be better to bench him and let someone like Redman take the lumps of failure that is sure to come for this team.

ESPN Sportscenter Draft, Headache Part Deux

-Christopher Dutra

OK, here we go again. I am analyzing the ESPN Sportscenter draft, rounds 6-10. For those looking for rounds 1-5, refer to this page.

41
Plaxico Burress, NYG
Summer Sanders
42
Michael Turner, Atl
Michael Smith
43
Anquan Boldin, Ari
Nick Bakay
44
Willis McGahee, Bal
Roy Williams
45
Kellen Winslow, Cle
Chris Mortensen
46
Dallas Clark, Ind
Method Man
47
Chargers D/ST, SD
Suzy Kolber
48
Anthony Gonzalez, Ind
Merril Hoge

Let’s see, are you staring at this screen and wondering if this is really round 6? McGahee (Yahoo! ranking of 22), is a late 3rd rounder in an 8 team league. Plax fell to the 6th round, along with Michael Turner and Anquan Boldin. Worst of all, a DEFENSE???????? IT’S ROUND SIX! The San Diego Charger defense is good, but not round 6 good fantasy-wise. Suzy Kolber dropped the ball on this one. Regardless, this round blew my mind.

Round 7, things got worse.

49
Reggie Bush, NO
Merril Hoge
50
Greg Jennings, GB
Suzy Kolber
51
Bears D/ST, Chi
Method Man
52
Devin Hester, Chi
Chris Mortensen
53
Steve Smith, Car
Roy Williams
54
Willie Parker, Pit
Nick Bakay
55
Ben Roethlisberger, Pit
Michael Smith
56
Marvin Harrison, Ind
Summer Sanders

Another defense, and now a kick returner/WR in a league that (I did my research) does not tally points for return yards! Devin Hester is not worth round 7! I cannot fathom why Devin Hester was picked before STEVE SMITH. The Bears defense was also selected about 4 rounds early. ESPN what do you know that the rest of the educated fantasy football community doesn’t?

I’m not even going to try to answer how Reggie Bush fell this far. He’s a fourth round pick in this draft, not a 7th. Nice grab by Merril Hoge.

57
Ronnie Brown, Mia
Summer Sanders
58
Brandon Marshall, Den
Michael Smith
59
Chris Cooley, Was
Nick Bakay
60
Laurence Maroney, NE
Roy Williams
61
Felix Jones, Dal
Chris Mortensen
62
Donovan McNabb, Phi
Method Man
63
Aaron Rodgers, GB
Suzy Kolber
64
Joey Galloway, TB
Merril Hoge

Holy crap, how do players fall so far?!?!?! Laurence Maroney? Does ESPN know who he is? Laurence Maroney has an Yahoo ranking of 20. Twenty. Brandon Marshall, Ronnie Brown (at the time of the draft) fell way way too far. I seriously wish I was in this draft. Once again, Chris Mortensen takes another young player way too early. Surprise.

65
Robert Meachem, NO
Merril Hoge
66
Nick Folk, Dal
Suzy Kolber
67
Laveranues Coles, NYJ
Method Man
68
Brett Favre, NYJ
Chris Mortensen
69
Giants D/ST, NYG
Roy Williams
70
Torry Holt, StL
Nick Bakay
71
LenDale White, Ten
Michael Smith
72
Tony Gonzalez, KC
Summer Sanders

Another defense taken….AND A KICKER. ITS ROUND 9! In 12 team leagues, this is like taking a kicker ROUND 6. SIX. No kicker is worth drafting before the last 2 rounds. Another cardinal rule broken by ESPN…Meachem is drafted really early by Hoge. I think there are a lot more WRs out there before Meachem (Yahoo ranking of….213…), but that is just me. Torry Holt (ranking of 31) taken way to late.

73
Earnest Graham, TB
Summer Sanders
74
Jonathan Stewart, Car
Michael Smith
75
Selvin Young, Den
Nick Bakay
76
Jeremy Shockey, NO
Roy Williams
77
Vikings D/ST, Min
Chris Mortensen
78
Nate Kaeding, SD
Method Man
79
Hines Ward, Pit
Suzy Kolber
80
Packers D/ST, GB
Merril Hoge

Sanders grabbed yet another faller in Graham (ranking of 37). Michael snagged Stewart late (ranking of 45). The first pick I can finally say that I like is by Roy Williams, taking Jeremy Shockey in round 10. That’s about right and a great pick. For 12 team leagues, its about round 7 (which is about right, ranking of 85). I personally think he will break out this year in a new system. Once again, two more defenses taken about 3-4 rounds before they should have. Round 10 is where usually the top defense is drafted in a 12 team league.

All in all, if you take one thing away from this—DON’T DO AS ESPN DOES, They are great for all things NFL, but this draft proves their fantasy knowledge concerns me. As weird as her draft was, I think Suzy Kolber’s team will win it all because having Drew Brees and LT is a deadly combo on any roster.

However, don’t use their strategy as your own. Please…
